CTEP Medical Program Students Tour County Coroner’s Office: Local Detectives Take Time to Share their Work with Students

ROP Medical Coroner class

In March, the CTEP Medical Technologies class visited the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office. Detectives Nick Baldridge and Mike Pruger presented various aspects of forensic medicine, enabling the students to realize connections between their CTEP class and their high school science and mathematics studies. Detective Baldridge volunteered his off-duty time to give the students a tour of the facility and to help them learn about careers in the forensic sciences. High school students were from Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz, San Lorenzo Valley, Soquel and Harbor High Schools. The students were able to witness the integration of the medical, law enforcement and technology career fields in a state-of-the-art facility. Especially important was when Detective Baldridge spoke about the impact on victim’s families during a criminal investigation. He conveyed to the students the importance of learning and practicing empathy and compassion in healthcare and related professions.
